< Previous NEWS20 | Healthcare Packaging • July/August 2019Packaging Equipment or Contract Manufacturer?According to the 2019 Flexible Packaging Mar-ket Assessment by PMMI Business Intelligence, if new machines don’t improve production operations by at least 20-25%, nearly 50% of companies stated they would go to a contract manufacturer before investing in in-house equipment. (Improving operations is mea-sured by lowering the total cost of ownership or by increasing pouch production.)One pharma manufacturer sought to add machinery for more blister pack capacity. The new line was quoted over $2 million, but did not add as much capacity as needed due to its run rate, so the company chose a contract manufacturer. If the machinery had higher run rates, or a lower cost for the slower machine, the company would have brought production in-house. The Executive Summary of this re-port is free: http://hcpgo.to/Mewtu —Kim OverstreetCBD Products Coming into Their OwnHemp Industry Daily announced that Kroger will be adding CBD topical lotion to stores in 17 states. According to the article, Kroger joins CVS, Rite-Aid and Walgreens. With major retailers standardizing on brands and offerings, CBD will now enjoy wide-spread exposure and convenient availability. Shoppers trust their local drug stores with their prescriptions, and are likely to feel that the products are safe and have been vetted by a responsible source. Many of these operations are relatively small and local, sold through the internet. With Kroger and others serving large regions, CBD producers will have to step up their pro-cessing and packaging. Contract packagers may find themselves with more business than they can handle. —Jim ChrzanHDA’s Traceability Seminar, October 2019The Healthcare Distribution Alliance’s 2019 Traceability Seminar will address how the implementation of Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA) measures is con-tinuing to transform the pharmaceutical supply chain by providing a forum for stakeholders to discuss prepara-tion, challenges, and progress re-lated to 2019 saleable returns ver-ification, dispenser requirements/current approaches to compliance, and supply chain viewpoints on 2023. The seminar, featuring an update from FDA, will be held at the Marriott Wardman Park in Washington, D.C., Oct. 21 to 23. —Melissa GriffenPMMI Awards Nearly $70,000 in Scholarships to StudentsPMMI, The Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies, has awarded sev-enteen students with $4,000 scholarships from the PMMI Scholarship in Memorial of Claude S. Breeden, Glenn Davis and Art Schaefer. Qualifying students must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, a career plan in packaging and processing machinery manufac-turing, and other awards/industry involvement.“We award these scholarships to two-year students to promote the value of tech-nical schools in closing the manufacturing skills gap,” says Kate Fiorianti, Senior Manager, Education, PMMI. “These two-year schools are affordable, making cut-ting-edge technical training accessible to many while offering more flexibility with internship and apprenticeship opportunities.”Overall, the PMMI Foundation provides over $200,000 in academic scholar-ships each year to students. —Keren Sookne1904-News.indd 208/16/19 3:46 PMNEWS July/August 2019 • Healthcare Packaging | 21Medical Marijuana Research: DEA Being SuedThe Scottsdale Research Institute filed a lawsuit against the DEA for blocking new growing applications for marijuana to be used in research. Legal flower for research only comes from one source—The University of Mississippi—and it is reportedly not of good quality, with some researchers saying it’s contained mold and stems. Marijuana Business Daily says the federal appellate court in D.C. ordered the DEA to respond to the lawsuit with-in 30 days. Sanford Wolgel, PhD, former Chief Science Officer for Cannabistry Labs, told Healthcare Packaging, “This lawsuit is completely justified. It should result in the DEA being ordered to process new applications to supply cannabis for federally funded research.” —Jim ChrzanTekni-Plex Acquires Healthcare Packaging PlantsTekni-Plex has acquired three manufacturing facilities from Amcor’s Flexible Packaging business unit. The facilities—two in Wisconsin and one in Massachusetts—provide a variety of steril-izable medical device packaging substrates including coated and uncoated Tyvek®, heat-seal and cold-seal coated paper and films, medical grade laminates and die-cut lids and labels. The company also recently purchased Italy-based Lameplast, to become part of their Tekni-Films business, providing plas-tic single/multi-dose containers for pharmaceutical, diagnostic, medical device, veterinary and cosmetic applications. Its sub-sidiary Tri-Seal purchased Brazilian manufacturer Geraldiscos, known for closure liners and induction seals for a wide variety of container types including PP, PE, HDPE, PVC, PET and glass. —Keren SookneDHL Supply Chain Expands Distribution Network 40%DHL Supply Chain, a provider of contract logistics and part of Deutsche Post DHL Group, is expanding its pharmaceutical and medical device distribution network by 40% this year with an investment of $150 million. The company is planning for nine new sites by the end of 2019 aiming to bring critical healthcare products closer to trade partners and patients. Located throughout the U.S., the sites will be licensed with temperature-controlled space supporting pharmaceutical stor-age requirements. The sites will also be designed for packaging and managed transportation. —Melissa GriffenLosing 20 Million Jobs to Robots by 2030?Oxford Economics reported that up to 20 million manufactur-ing jobs will be lost worldwide due to artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and robotics by 2030. The report notes that existing business models in many sectors will be disrupted. The proliferation of these technologies will also create jobs in yet-to-exist industries, but policy makers face many challenges in the road ahead. —Keren Sookne1904-News.indd 218/16/19 3:46 PMHEALTHCARE PACKAGING EXPO22 | Healthcare Packaging • July/August 2019Healthcare Packaging EXPO 2019 (Sept. 23—25; Las Vegas Convention Center) co-located with PACK EXPO Las Vegas 2019, will debut five brand-new reasons not to miss 2019’s largest and most comprehensive packaging event in the world.Produced by PMMI, The Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies, 2,000 exhibiting companies will host an expected 30,000 attendees across the almost sold-out 900,000 net sq ft exhibit floor, including 5,000 international visitors from more than 125 countries.“We are constantly looking for ways to improve the attendee experience and provide access to the latest industry trends, thought leaders and maximize the networking at the show,” says Laura Thompson, VP, Trade Shows, PMMI. “What better way than off er-ing more on-floor experiences and education to maximize time spent at the show?”Check out this year’s NEW features:1.
